Arlie Marquardt

Arlie Lester Marquardt, age 85 of Town of Newton, passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Appleton Medical Center. He was born on March 30, 1929 to Albert and Pauline “Lena” (Groskreutz) Marquardt. Arlie was baptized on April 21, 1929 and confirmed on July 12, 1942 at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Newton. He married Doris D. Lange on May 12, 1951 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Crystal Lake. Five children were born from this union, Diane, Joan, Jean, Kenneth and Susan. Arlie worked at various jobs during his life including on his family farm, Westfield Co-op Dairy, a milk hauler and at Speed Queen. Arlie was appointed as a Deputy Sheriff in 1969 and became a full time member of the Marquette Sheriff’s Department in 1971. Arlie was promoted to Lieutenant in 1985 and retired on January 2, 1991. Arlie served as Town of Newton Treasurer from 1959 to 1991 and Town Board Supervisor from 1991 to 2005. He was a member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Newton serving as an Elder and Chairman from 1960 to 1994 and Treasurer from 1994 to 2014. He was a charter member of the Town of Newton Volunteer Fire Department. Arlie enjoyed old time music, especially country and blue grass.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Doris; 4 children, Diane (Jon) Schubert, Joan (Gene) Krueger, Jean (Don) Krueger, and Susan (Wayne) Lutz; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. Arlie was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kenneth; sister, LaVerne Persack; two brothers, Arnold and Marvin Marquardt.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Steinhaus-Holly Funeral Home, Westfield and on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Newton from 10:00 am until the service. The service for Arlie will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dale Boening officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.
