It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Daniel James Winkler, who peacefully passed away in his sleep on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at his beloved cabin — his little slice of heaven nestled deep in the woods.
Daniel was born on August 28, 1961, at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Port Washington, Wisconsin, to Donald and Rosemary Winkler. As their only son, Dan was deeply cherished from the very beginning, and his family always found it special that he shared a birthday with his older sister.
From an early age, Dan found joy in the outdoors. From dawn until dusk, he could often be found exploring the woods, fascinated by wildlife and eager to share his latest “discoveries” with his parents — including the occasional tall tale about spotting “baby hippos.” His adventurous spirit and love for nature never faded.
Dan’s parents were very involved in Boy and Girl Scouts, and through years of dedication and hard work, Dan earned the distinguished honor of Eagle Scout on June 22, 1976. He graduated from Cedarburg High School in June of 1979 and went on to pursue the trade he was naturally gifted in — carpentry — graduating from MATC in 1980.
In his younger years, when he wasn’t working, Dan loved traveling out west hunting with lifelong friends. His cabin proudly displays countless trophies collected over the years, including his most prized possession — a massive bull elk. Hunting was only one of Dan’s many passions. He also had an undeniable talent for fishing and spent countless hours on the water, often driving his fishing buddy’s crazy trying to protect his favorite secret fishing spots.
Dan met the love of his life, Cynthia Ann Boget, at a friend’s cabin in Montello, Wisconsin. One evening spent under the stars turned into a love story that would last a lifetime. Just eight months later, they were married. Cindy moved to Wisconsin with her two sons, Mark and Matthew Wackt, whom Dan lovingly raised as his own. Through every season of life, especially the challenging teenage years, Dan loved and supported them wholeheartedly. He was incredibly proud of the hardworking men they became and the beautiful families they built.
Later that year to their joy, Dan and Cindy welcomed their daughter, Laura, into the world. To say she had her father wrapped around her finger from the very beginning would be an understatement. Their bond only grew stronger through the years — fierce, unconditional, and the kind of father-daughter relationship many only dream of having.
Using his extraordinary gift for carpentry, Dan built his family’s cabin with his own two hands. That cabin became more than a home — it became a sanctuary, a gathering place, and a legacy that will continue honoring him for generations to come.
Dan’s greatest joy was sharing his love of the outdoors with his children and grandchildren. Whether teaching them how to hunt, fish, or simply appreciate wildlife, those memories will forever be treasured by the family he loved so deeply.
One of his greatest blessings in life was becoming a grandfather. He was lovingly known as the “King of Yes” because he could never say no to his sweet granddaughters. He showered them with endless love, laughter, and memories every chance he got.
Dan is reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Cynthia Ann Winkler, who recently passed away after a courageous battle with cancer; his parents, Donald and Rosemary Winkler; his in-laws, Marion and Maxine Griesmar; his great-grandparents; aunt & uncles and the many beloved family pets who brought him joy throughout the years.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Laura Klenner (Daniel); stepsons, Mark Wackt and Matthew Wackt (Sadie Perham & Collin Taylor); and his cherished granddaughters, Audrey Klenner, Evelynn Klenner, Olivia Wackt, and Carolina Wackt, and his older sister, Deb Kranitz (Tony); sister-in-law, Barb Viland (Victor), & many loved nieces & nephews.
He also leaves behind many dear friends whose lives were forever touched by his caring nature, kindness, humor, wisdom, and unwavering love for the outdoors.
A Celebration of Daniel Winklers life will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026 from 1:00 pm-5:00 pm at the American Legion Hall in Grafton WI.
In Lieu of flowers, donate to your local boy scouts, boys & girls club, youth hunters group, Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary or a local animal shelter... all of which meant a lot to Daniel over the years.
