Durwin Smith

March 3, 1923 — September 16, 2025

Westfield

It is with deep respect and loving remembrance that we announce the peaceful passing of Durwin Smith, a proud World War II veteran, carpenter, and lifelong farmer, who departed this life on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the age of 102.

Durwin was born in Oxford, Wisconsin, to Robert and Lydia (Gerbitz) Smith. He answered the call of duty during one of history’s most defining moments, serving in the United States Army during World War II. He served honorably in a Port Construction Unit as a Hard Hat Diver from 1943 to 1946.

After returning home from the war, he married Geraldine Grabarski, and together they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and family, raising three children: Greg, Ramona, and Teressa. Durwin returned to the land, working as a dedicated farmer for the rest of his life. Tending the soil with the same perseverance and integrity he showed in service, he farmed in Marquette County for over 75 years and contributed to his community with humility. In addition to farming, Durwin was a member of the Carpenter's Union, through which he hung drywall nearby and out of Madison with his best buddy, Donny Mularkey and son, Greg.

Durwin was also a member of the Westfield VFW Post 8718, St. John's Lutheran Church in Oxford, and the Jolly Squares Square Dance Club. Durwin served at the Harrisville Bratfest from its inception until well into his 90s. He was known for his Euchre and Blackjack skills, his quiet strength, and easy smile.

He is survived by his children, Greg (Mary) Smith and Teressa Smith; grandchildren, Heidi (Steve) Robinson and Shannon (Margaret) Smith; great-grandchildren, Andrew Smith, Ashley (Noah) Driscoll, Elizabeth (Jeremy) Lesniak, and Connor Robinson; great-great-grandchildren, Wesley Lesniak and Sawyer Lesniak; his brother-in-law, Darold Drew; and cousin, Dorothy Wohlfert. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; daughter, Ramona Volbrecht; Ramona's husband, Larry Volbrecht; and his siblings, Donald (Marion, Barbara) Smith, John (Carol) Smith, and Lona Drew.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m., followed by a celebration of life service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Larry Sheppard officiating on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Oxford, WI. Interment with military honors will follow at the Oxford Village Cemetery, and then lunch at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the two organizations near and dear to Durwin's heart: St John's Lutheran Church, Oxford, WI, and the Westfield VFW Post 8718.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the dedicated caregivers, especially the compassionate CNAs and nurses, whose kindness, support, and professionalism provided comfort and dignity to Durwin in his final years. Your care means the world to us.
