Julia Courtney

May 26, 1936 — March 9, 2018

Julia M. Courtney, age 81 of Westfield, formerly of Briggsville, passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018 at Montello Care Center.  She was born on May 26, 1936 in Milwaukee, the oldest of three children to Albert and Florence (Litzow) Schroeder.  Julia married Lawrence Beres and was blessed with seven children.  She later married Robert Courtney and was blessed with an additional daughter.

She loved Briggsville and took pride in her home on Lake Mason.  She enjoyed being involved in the Briggsville community. It could be reading to the kindergarteners or finding a card game. She was truly a people person.  Her love for cooking and recipes was always a topic of discussion.  Cooking for 2 to 200 was a feast she loved to do.

After selling her home in Briggsville, she moved to Westfield to be closer to her children.  She would read two to three books a day and could be found weekly at the library looking for something she hadn’t read. Sitting in the sunshine with a book was a favorite.  Her quick witted personality and the love for her family will be truly missed.

She is survived by her eight children, Marie (Dude) Thompson, Bert (Becky) Beres, Matt (Sheryl) Beres, Tom (Pattie) Beres, Marg (John) Unger, Jean Weir, Mark (Chris Essex) Beres and Melissa (Brian) Bowles; 20 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren with 3 more arriving this summer; two brothers, Fred Schroeder and John (Gwen) Schroeder; other relatives and friends.  Julia was preceded in death by her parents and her two husbands.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for family and close friends will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Briggsville with Fr. Gary Krahenbuhl officiating.  No visitation will be held.  Inurnment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Briggsville.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Catholic Charities, 230 Central Ave, Montello, WI 53949.  Her Catholic faith was her guidance.

Julia’s family would like to thank the staff at Montello Care Center for their care of mom.  We know her stories will be remembered and shared many times.
