Winfred “Neal” Helm

August 17, 1933 – April 27, 2026

Winfred Neal Helm, known and loved by everyone as Neal, passed away surrounded by love.

Neal was born in Jackson Township, Adams County, Wisconsin, the son of Walter and Winifred (Bement) Helm. He was raised in the Wisconsin Dells area, growing up on the Helm Homestead, which has been in the family since 1870 and remains in the Helm family today. It was there that he developed the strong work ethic that stayed with him throughout his life.

Neal began his career working for the construction company that built Marshall Field’s in Milwaukee County in the late 1950s. His dedication and strong work ethic earned him a position with Marshall Field’s despite having no prior experience. He went on to attend night school to learn HVAC, building the skills that supported a long and successful career. Neal dedicated 30 years to Marshall Field’s as a Facilities Engineer before retiring.

After retiring at the age of 62, Neal and his beloved wife, Minerva “Mickey” Helm, whom he married on August 13, 1955, in Milwaukee, enjoyed many wonderful years together. They spent the majority of their lives residing in West Allis, WI, and later built their dream home in Grand Marsh, where they spent many happy retirement years.

Neal was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Minerva “Mickey” Helm; his daughter, Kathleen “Kathy” Morgan; his twin brother, Dale Helm; his older brother, Sidney Helm; his sisters, Faith Fell and Jean Lees; his son-in-law, Lenny Wahlen; and his nephews, Keith Helm, Jim Lees, and David Fell.

He was a devoted father to Ramona “Mona” (Lenny) Wahlen and Kathleen “Kathy” (Blaine) Morgan.

He was a proud grandfather to Laurel (Robert “Bobby”) Ruh and Jason Wahlen, and a loving great-grandfather to Isabel Heidenrich (Josh Tello) and Veda Rain Wahlen.

He is also survived by his nephew George Lees and Ken Fell; his nieces Pat Lees, Lisa Helm, and Jackie Fell; along with many other nieces, nephews, extended family members, church friends, and dear friends who loved him deeply.

Neal was known for his strong work ethic, kind heart, and willingness to help anyone in need. A man of strong Lutheran faith, he was deeply involved with Immanuel Lutheran Church in Westfield, Wisconsin, and always found ways to serve and support others. He had a gift for listening, caring, and making people feel important. To many, he was not only a father and grandfather, but also a trusted friend and steady presence.

Neal loved playing pool and was active in pool leagues. Just days before his passing, on April 22, 2026, he proudly took 4th place with his partner in a tournament, a reflection of the joy, spirit, and determination he carried throughout his life.

He also had a deep love for sports. Neal enjoyed golfing, hunting, bowling, and fishing, and was an avid fan of Wisconsin sports teams. He especially loved watching the Brewers, Badgers, Packers, and Bucks.

Neal also enjoyed watching his favorite shows, especially The Curse of Oak Island. In fact, his only “regret” would be not getting to see them finally uncover the treasure. Just a week or two ago, with his signature optimism, he joked, “I sure hope they find the treasure before I die.”

Neal will be remembered for his bright personality, generous heart, and the way he always put others before himself. He was loved by so many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him
