Dr. Jacob Albert Hines D.V.M., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2020 at the age of 92. He was born in West Salem, Ohio on May 1, 1927. His parents were Miles E. Hines and Ruth A. (Kissane) Hines. He graduated from Homer High School near Homerville, Ohio in 1945 and joined the Army that year. He served in the European Theater. He was discharged in 1947 and married Genevieve Harriet Mantz the same year. He then attended The Ohio State University where he studied Chemistry as an undergraduate and then attended the College of Veterinary Medicine where he graduated in 1953. Upon graduation he moved to Wisconsin and started his veterinary practice called the Adams Marquette Veterinary Service that his son, Steve, runs today. Doc Hines practiced veterinary medicine for 53 years. He and Genevieve raised 5 children: Ruth (Kevin) Schiedermayer, Steve (June) Hines, Sally (Dave) Schroeder , Norman (Ricki) Hines, and Amy (Levi) Mast.

Doc was an active member of our County, State and Nation, serving on a variety of boards and associations including: Wisconsin Hereford Association, Marquette Farm Bureau, Board of Directors of the M&I Bank for 32 years, Westfield School District Board (1969-1981), 4-H Leader in Marquette County for 26 years, National Institute of Animal Agriculture(AABP liaison), Livestock Conservation Institute, American Association of Bovine Practitioners as director district 5 (Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana) 6 years, American Veterinary Medical Association (serving on the animal welfare committee from 1987-1996 as the co-chairman), He received the prestigious Certificate of Appreciation from Governor Tommy Thompson, Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association, Wisconsin Board of Veterinary examiners 1987-1995 (serving as chairman 1991-1995), Wisconsin Agri-business council, Oxford Lions Club, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6003 of Oxford.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oxford from 1957-2009. He served as Session Member, Elder, and sang in the choir when Genevieve (Ginny) played the organ and piano.

Though his profession was Veterinary Medicine, his passion was serving the people in the community and the State. He was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly (42nd district) in a special election in 2001 and served in the Capital for 7 years. He was the chairman of the Public Health Committee for 6 years.

He was the recipient of numerous awards and the ones he was most proud of were the Wisconsin Veterinarian of the year in 1995 and the Ohio State Alumni Recognition Award in 2003 and the “Older Worker of the year “ 2002 by the Wisconsin Older Workers Network. He was honored for his service in WWII with the Old Glory Honor Flight of June 1, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Metta Martin, his grandson Cody Schroeder and his beloved wife of nearly 48 years Genevieve.

Besides the 5 children he is survived by his 12 grandchildren Tiffany (Jacob) Waskey, Jordan (Senja) Hines, Ian Hines, Janelle (Aaron) Loenhorst, Genevieve Hines, Riana (Daniel) Hawkins, Trevor Hines, Dustin (Michelle) Schroeder, Clint (Kim) Schroeder, Tate (Cassandra) Schroeder, Luke (Katie) Schroeder and Celeste Mast. Eight great grandchildren; Tara Schroeder, Caleb and Isaac Schroeder, Solomon, Silas, and Avery Hines, and Avalon and Lewis Waskey. His Sister Agnes Hughes and other nieces and nephews.

Jacob Hines married Pamela Joan Ravines in 1999 and moved to Texas in 2012. He is survived by Pam and her extended family.

Full military honors for Doc Hines will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at 11:45 a.m. at the Oxford VFW Hall, N3250 1st Drive, Oxford.  A memorial gathering will follow the military honors until 2:00 p.m. at the Oxford VFW Hall. Inurnment will be in Lake View “Crooked Lake” Cemetery, Town of Jackson, Adams County at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to First Presbyterian Church of Oxford or your local humane society.
